With or without snow,
this is the sledging field.

Whether we stand
on green or white, we hear

the shouts of this or
former years, we see

the colours of sledges,
coats, hats, gloves, ruddy

faces climbing back up
to be king of the castle.

We harness gravity to our will
and though we’re not sure

whether we’re flying or falling,
whether we’re screaming

in fun or in fear, we know
that we need these few iced days

to slide us, shrieking,
into the new year.

This is the first of 12 poems which will be published each month during 2014 as part of Ailsa Holland’s post as Poet in Residence at Tegg’s Nose Country Park, Cheshire. The poems will be also be published on the Tegg’s Nose facebook page and displayed in the park’s Visitor Centre. For more information see moormaidpress.co.uk. The photos for this project will be taken by various people: this one is by Ailsa Holland.

  1. Just wish we had the snow this year for the joys of sledging and not the rain for the ducks
