Poe sits and glows on the gatepost
and watches as they all float past:
witches, ghoulies, Harry Potter,
zombie scarecrows, a small Darth Vader,
vampires, pirates, skeletons, a bat,
the Bride of Frankenstein with her dad,
a walking pumpkin and an undead girl.
Then the door is closed, the street is still,
the laughter trapped behind brick and glass.
Poe gives a grin, his flaming eyes flash
and he waits for the ball to begin.
First the cobwebs light up like stars on a string
then comes the wind like a moorland stream
and the quiet leaves know their hour has come,
lift up into dresses, mantles, cloaks,
whip up into hats, scarves, boots,
and bow to each other and start to spin
and as they twirl Poe hears them sing
their paper song of russet night
and Poe makes a wish that he too might fly
and join the dance.
