You opened with an ace.

We were both on fire,
couldn’t put a foot wrong.

Sometimes you took charge,
sometimes I was in control.

The exchange was electrifying.

But at 3.34
under a cloudless sky

a ball punched the net
like a fist in the guts.

Was it your mis-hit or mine?

Shaken, we made one fault after another.
The game became lacklustre, scrappy

and we were too tired
to remember the rules.

In the end I think the onlookers
thought I was the winner.

  1. A poem for National Poetry Day with its theme of ‘Games’.

  2. Ah, so now I know which your line was in the patchwork poem…
Lovely, Ailsa (in a dark sort of way!)
